about

Having made music in the past where we sculpted tones and sounds out of field recordings, we wanted to explore something new. We decided to write slowly-evolving pieces that mixed Shanan's synth and guitar setup, Michael's software-based sound engineering, and shared field recordings. In contrast to our earlier material, we let the field recordings sit there, so that the small idiosyncrasies and events could just surface where they occurred.

We wanted to make long pieces that didn't suggest you had to ask yourself "where is this going?" but instead could just (hopefully) enjoy any given moment. Back in the 70s, in parallel to what Eno was saying about ambient music, composer James Tenney talked about how an avoidance of drama in music invited people to really listen to each sound as it occurs.

We also talked about music as an antidote for a time that has seen too much move too fast. Ambient music can challenge like any other kind of anti-establishment music, but in a way that de-escalates, that pulls back from the action and lets a moment become an hour. So it's hopefully relaxing, but not necessarily because the music itself is pretty or without edges.

Tonkyn Pearson Wellington, New Zealand

Duo f.k.a. Montano, creating ambient music. Originally using only the sounds of one field recording per track, but more recently putting ageing hardware (Shanan) through the digital mangler (Michael) and layering in quiet recordings (both).
